Creating ‘Nature’ in the Residential Landscape

IMG_3038A dry Creek bed not only adds a unique character to the residential landscape but it can be a functional asset to your property. If designed correctly, a creek bed will promote positive drainage from your residence and can become a distinct feature. Our unique method of using a variety of river rock and boulder sizes mimics the natural formation of a riverbed while our blend of groundcovers grow into the space to soften the threshold into the surrounding landscape. Planting the riverbed with grasses creates a vertical element with diverse textures and the use of mixed shrubs along the bank defines the space while adding a color contrast against the stone bed.

An Evening on a Contemporary Patio

half_tiseatingareaartfire

This contemporary patio is a simple but inviting space that is defined by its smooth finish concrete and dynamic evening colors. The smooth finish of the concrete becomes a flat canvas which allows the furniture to define its own space. The step down patio becomes a space of its own that pops with the red fire feature acting as a focal point. As the sun goes down on this space the LED spot lights turn on to add a textured backlighting for evening enjoyment. The mix of rock, cobble, and mulch creates a naturalistic and diverse texture to the planting beds which otherwise would get lost in a monotony of barks and fibers.

Decorative Concrete in the Landscape

15Jan13 Anderson Finished 015

Concrete is a unique material that is constantly evolving in its applications. It can become an intrinsic element in the landscape that is simple but elegant. We use concrete as a sculpture in the landscape that can be free standing or functional. The basic knee wall becomes a vertical element and backdrop to accent the color and texture of these grasses. The dark charcoal color is bold but not intrusive and as the eye draws closer the detail of a wood grain finish becomes apparent with added interest.

Winter Watering Protects and Enhances Your Landscape

The residential landscape is not only an outdoor living space but is an investment and an asset. Plants are an essential piece to the value of that investment but do require proper care. Overall the care for plants is simple but it entails year round attention. Located in a high mountain desert landscape our winter conditions are very dry with fluctuating temperatures. These conditions will weaken the root structure and can cause plants to die in the warmer summer months. A damaged root system may not show signs of stress until the warmest times of the season when a plant is more apt to evaporation and requires a higher frequency of watering.

To protect the longevity and aesthetics of your plants practice a simple winter watering routine. For the best results plan on watering your plants when the ground is not frozen and free of snow and the soil and air temperatures are at least 40 degress farenheit. It is ideal to water around mid day to provide ample time for saturation before sundown and lower overnight temperatures.

New Plantings are the most susceptible to these risks because they have not had enough time to root in and adapt to their settings but existing plantings and trees still must be watered as well.

Watering:

Watering should not be done using an automated irrigation system but instead should be done by hand.To reduce the consumption of water; apply water directly to the critical root zone under the drip line of the plants branches and avoid using spray systems.Established trees may require subterreanean watering.

Trees: 10 gallons of water for every inch of its diameter. (ex. 3″ diameter=30 gallons of water)

New Shrubs: 5 gallons of water 2 times a month

Small Established shrub: 5 gallons once a month

Large Established shrub: 18 gallons a month

*Reduce amount of watering to account for times of precipitation

Contemporay Outdoor Dining at its Finest

Modern Outdoor Living Space with Low Voltage Lighting

This is a unique outdoor dining area that we created in the Highlands of Denver.  The clean lines of the decorative concrete patio are a direct link to the architecture of this modern home.  The custom wood arbor defines the space and helps create the fealing of an outdoor room.  The bright colored drapes add flair and softness to the hard edges.  The LED lighting adds a subltle warmth and makes the space usable during the day as well as at night. The annual pots bring in some added color and the outdoor dining set completes this dynamic space. As they say its all in the details.

Amazing Modern Water Feature in Denver

Custom Modern Water Feature and Rusted Steel Plate

Here is an amazing custom modern water feature in the Highlands neighbor hood of Denver. We created this unique architectual privacy wall using a muittude of diffrent materials like integraly colored concrete and patinated steel. The textured concrete piece was made by using wood forms and we grinded the water trough to expose the aggregate to add interest and distinction with the other architectural elements. The custom steel panel  adds a scuptural component  to the piece and creates a beautiful contrasting backdrop to the plant material below .  This custom water feature not only adds privacy to this outdoor living space , but it also serves as  the main focal point of this landscape.
